How to Move a Gun Safe, Safely

Authored by Taylor Innes

You’ve either just bought a gun safe or you’re looking at moving the one you own. Either way, your gun safe is a great addition to keep your valuables safe. Moving your gun safe is not a one-person job and requires some prep work to ensure a safe and easy move. Follow these safety tips for moving a gun safe.

Plan ahead

Planning ahead will help your move go smoothly. Clear the area where your safe is going. Measure the new space and clear a path to the new location. If you are moving a safe that already holds your personal belongings, clean it out before you move anything.

Ask for moving help

Asking friends, family or neighbors for help with the heavy lifting is a must. Moving a gun safe is not a one-person job and will require 3-4 people. Having help will distribute the weight of your gun safe, making this move safe for everyone. A moving dolly, hand truck or lifting straps are helpful tools to use.

Things to help ease the move:

  • A moving dolly will still require help with lifting your gun safe on and off the dolly but will aid with the actual move of the safe. Once loaded onto the dolly the safe can be rolled to the new location, lifted off and set into place.
  • A appliance hand truck will make moving your safe more of a one-man job, however, having someone to help you would still be a good idea. Simply, slide the hand truck under your safe, attach the safety strap, tip back the safe and wheel it to its new location.
  • Lifting straps help evenly distribute the weight of your safe, making it seem lighter when lifting and carrying. Place your lifting straps in an X position. Center your safe on top of the straps in the center of the X. Using two people, lift the safe using the straps and carry it to the new location.

Steps for moving a gun safe

  1. Plan where your gun safe will go.
  2. Clean a space for the safe.
  3. Clear the area around the safe & the path to it.
  4. Empty the contents of the safe.
  5. Use one of the methods above to move your safe.
  6. Place the safe in its new location.
